There I was, home alone, laying on the floor after bending over to pick something up, and suddenly, I couldn’t get back up. My back had given out. I was stuck on the floor with a 4-month-old baby and a two-year-old running around. Terrified and unable to move, I thankfully had my phone on me and called my dad. He came over to help with the babies while I slowly rolled onto my back, began to breathe, and focused on what my body was telling me. I realized I had been going too hard, too fast. My core was weak, and with two babies under two, I had not been prioritizing my postpartum recovery.
This experience was a wake-up call. Even as the creator of the RESTORE program, I had neglected my own healing. Once my back settled down a couple of days later, I made a non-negotiable date with myself to press play on my program and get to work. That was the last time my back went out. I’m still amazed at the benefits of this program, and it’s become my mission to help other mothers experience the same healing.
WHY PILATES IS ESSENTIAL FOR PRENATAL AND POSTPARTUM RECOVERY
Pilates is a powerful tool for both prenatal and postpartum recovery, offering a range of benefits that support a mother’s physical and mental well-being.
1. Strengthening the Core
During pregnancy, the core muscles stretch and weaken to accommodate the growing baby. Postpartum, it’s crucial to rebuild these muscles to support the spine and overall stability. Pilates focuses on core strength, helping to repair diastasis recti (abdominal separation) and prevent issues like my own back injury.
2. Realigning the Body
Pregnancy and childbirth can throw your body out of alignment, leading to discomfort and pain. Pilates helps to realign the pelvis, spine, and other joints, promoting better posture and reducing pain. It’s about getting your bones back to where they should be and ensuring your muscles are functioning properly.
3. Enhancing Breathing Techniques
Proper breathing is a cornerstone of Pilates. It helps to oxygenate the body, reduce stress, and improve overall function. Learning to breathe correctly is especially important postpartum, as it aids in calming the mind and supporting mental health.
4. Managing Stress and Anxiety
New motherhood is incredibly physical and emotionally taxing. Pilates incorporates mindful movement and breathwork, which can help manage postpartum anxiety and improve mental stability. It’s a beautiful way to release trapped emotions and promote healing.
5. Supporting the Physical Demands of Motherhood
The physical demands of motherhood are relentless. Lifting, bending, and carrying a child all day can take a toll on your body. Pilates prepares you for these tasks by strengthening the muscles that support everyday movements, helping you stay out of pain and maintain your energy levels.
Introducing Restore: Your Postpartum Repair Program
I developed RESTORE to address these exact needs. This program is designed to get you back into optimal posture, ensure you’re breathing properly, and revive the muscles that went dormant during pregnancy. It’s about keeping you pain-free and mentally stable, so you can be the best mom possible.
I feel you, mama. I know how hard it is to prioritize your healing with all you have going on. But let this be your reminder to take good care of yourself. If you’re stuck on the floor, nothing gets done. Invest in your well-being with Pilates, and give yourself the strength and stability to thrive as a mother.
