You’re Always Building Your Own House

Inspired by a story shared by Sahil Bloom—and extended into the world of wellness and Pilates
An old carpenter once told his boss he planned to retire. The boss, though saddened, understood and asked if he’d build just one final house. The carpenter agreed, but his heart wasn’t in it. He cut corners, used cheap materials, and rushed the job.
When the house was complete, the boss handed him the keys.
“This is your house,” he said. “My gift to you.”
The carpenter was stunned. If he had known he was building his own house, he would have done it differently. Now, he’d have to live in the very thing he had carelessly constructed.
The message:
You’re always building your own house. And one day, you’ll live in what you’ve built.
When I read this in The Curiosity Chronicle by Sahil Bloom, it stopped me in my tracks. I’ve felt this in my bones—through movement, through motherhood, through the way I choose to show up for my clients and for myself. And it’s exactly what I try to communicate through every class I teach and every post I share.
You are always building your house—your physical body, your mental landscape, your nervous system, your relationships, your sense of self. Every Pilates practice, every meal, every conscious choice is a brick in the foundation of your future.
Let’s take this idea and explore it through the lens of wellness:
The Wellness House
Every bite of food, every hour of sleep, every mindful pause, and yes—every Pilates session—is a beam in the structure of your health.
Not every day will feel perfect. But the integrity with which you approach your wellness adds up.
Skipping self-care might seem harmless today, but over time, it shows.
So does showing up—slowly, steadily, with care.
Are you building a body that supports your energy, your longevity, your aliveness?
The Integrity House
Pilates is a discipline of details. Of breathing through discomfort. Of noticing the nuances in how you move, hold, and release.
It teaches you to pay attention—to your posture, your alignment, your internal world.
And that’s the deeper lesson: If you can be precise with your breath and movement on the mat, you’re more likely to act with integrity and excellence off of it.
The small things matter.
They shape the structure you live within—physically, emotionally, spiritually.
The Self-Worth House
Y
ou are worthy of a house built with care.
Not one slapped together in a hurry to “get it done.”
You’re not here to survive your life—you’re here to experience it fully.
So take pride in the rituals that ground you.
Fuel your body with love.
Breathe deeply. Move mindfully.
Rest when needed.
Speak gently to yourself.
You’re not just passing the time—you’re laying bricks.
Build something beautiful.
Something that holds you through every season of life.
That reflects your strength, your softness, your presence.
Something you’re proud to live within.
Because you are always building your house.
And you deserve to love the one you live in.
